Abstract: One of the central topics in my research has been the processing of amplitude modulation in human hearing. The most prominent result of these efforts is the concept of a modulation filterbank, as it was developed in Torsten Dau’s PhD thesis and published in two influential JASA papers in 1997 by Dau, Kollmeier and myself. In this overview talk I will show how the view on AM processing has evolved since the 1980’s, which inspirations from other disciplines (neurophysiology, radar research) were instrumental and how important the role of paradigms can be in the planning and interpretation of experimental data.
